The Apache HTTP Server (/ ə ˈ p æ tʃ i / ə-PATCH-ee) is a free and open-source cross-platform web server, released under the terms of Apache License 2.0.It is developed and maintained by a community of developers under the auspices of the Apache Software Foundation.
The original program was named zb "ZeusBench V1.0" and it was written by Adam Twiss (Zeus Technology), in 1996, in order to test performance of Zeus Web Server.Soon later Twiss licensed (donated) that program to the Apache Group so that the derived program was renamed ab "ApacheBench".
But about one week later, the foundation released a new version of start.elf that could read a new entry in config.txt (gpu_mem=xx) and could dynamically assign an amount of RAM (from 16 to 256 MB in 8 MB steps) to the GPU, obsoleting the older method of splitting memory, and a single start.elf worked the same for 256 MB and 512 MB Raspberry Pis.
