Vergennes was settled in 1766 by Donald MacIntosh. It was established as a city in 1788, [1] the only one in Vermont not to have been first chartered as a town or independent village. The Gen. Samuel Strong House is a historic house on West Main Street in Vergennes, Vermont. Built in 1796, it is one of Vermont's finest examples late Georgian/early Federal period architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. [1]
The Strong House is located southwest of downtown Vergennes, on the northwest side of West Main Street (Vermont Route 22A). It consists of a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-story main block, covered by a front-facing gabled roof, with integral flanking side-gable single-story ells. It is a wood-frame structure, with clapboard siding and a stone foundation.
