Hyacinthoides non-scripta / ˌ h aɪ ə s ɪ n ˈ θ ɔɪ d iː z n ɒ n ˈ s k r ɪ p t ə / (formerly Endymion non-scriptus or Scilla non-scripta) is a bulbous perennial plant found in Atlantic areas from the north-western part of the Iberian Peninsula to the British Isles, and also frequently used as a garden plant.
Mertensia paniculata thrives in moist wooded or meadow areas. It is a shade-tolerant species and is present in early and late-seral communities.While it is most common in mid-succession, it has been spotted in areas in Alaska and Canada after events such as fire or logging, as an early successional community.
The flowers usually have five (occasionally 4, 6 or 7) pale to mid violet-blue petals fused together into a bell shape, about 12–30 mm (15 ⁄ 32 – 1 + 3 ⁄ 16 in) long and five long, pointed green sepals behind them. Plants with pale pink or white flowers may also occur. [6] The petal lobes are triangular and curve outwards.
According to the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families as of July 2012, the genus contains 11 species and one interspecific hybrid. [4] The majority of species are distributed around the Mediterranean Basin, with only one species, Hyacinthoides non-scripta (the familiar spring flower of bluebell woods in the British Isles and elsewhere) occurring further north in north-western Europe.
