The CNU women's volleyball team was established in 1977, and has enjoyed considerable success in recent years under head coach Lindsay Birch. The Captains have appeared in every NCAA D-III tournament since 2006 (with the exception of 2020, which was cancelled due to COVID-19 ).
Christopher Newport (CNU) plays its home games at the 4,200 seat TowneBank Stadium, which is located on-campus in Newport News, Virginia. Founded in 2001, the Captains were led by head coach Matt Kelchner until 2016. Coach Art Link, only the second head coach in CNU football history took the helm starting with the 2017 football season.

The 1937 men's basketball team won the Virginia State AAU Championship and qualified for the AAU Nationals in Denver, Colorado. [1] More recently, the Builders won the USCAA men's basketball tournament in 2002, 2003, and 2024. [2] The school also fields a women's basketball team that has regularly competed nationally at their level. [3]
