Selenite, satin spar, desert rose, and gypsum flower are crystal habit varieties of the mineral gypsum.. All varieties of gypsum, including selenite and alabaster, are composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (meaning that it has two molecules of water), with the chemical formula CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O. Selenite contains no selenium, the similar names both derive from Greek selḗnē (σελήνη 'Moon').
The Selenite Range is a mountain range in western Pershing County, Nevada. [1] The range is a north–south trending feature approximately 27 miles (43 km) long and 4 miles (6.4 km) wide. The Fox Range lies to the west across the San Emidio Desert valley and the south end of the Black Rock Desert playa.
Selenite Peak is set in the Black Rock Desert which has hot summers and cold winters. [5] The desert is an example of a cold desert climate as the desert's elevation makes temperatures cooler than lower elevation deserts. Due to the high elevation and aridity, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. Summer nights are comfortably cool.
Selenite "sword", 22.6 by 2.6 by 1.6 centimetres (8.90 in × 1.02 in × 0.63 in). A small version of the giant crystals, likely found in a natural cavity in the mine. A scientific team coordinated by Paolo Forti, specialist of cave minerals and crystallographer at the University of Bologna (Italy), explored the cave in detail in 2006.

Spring and fall are the most favorable seasons to visit Glass Mountain. According to the Köppen climate classification system, it is located in a Cold semi-arid climate zone, which is defined by the coldest month having an average mean temperature below 32 °F (0 °C), and at least 50% of the total annual precipitation being received during the spring and summer.
As the sea retreated, baryte precipitated out of the water and crystallized around grains of quartz sand. This left behind large formation of reddish sandstone, locally called Garber Sandstone, containing deposits of rose rock. [2] [3] [4] The rose rock was selected as the official rock of the US state of Oklahoma in 1968. [2] [5]
