It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. A satellite prison camp, located adjacent to the facility, houses minimum-security inmates.
On April 6, 2020, the ACLU sued the Bureau of Prisons and FCI-Oakdale Warden Rodney Myers on behalf of incarcerated people. According to the ACLU, "The legal team seeks the release of people who are incarcerated and at high risk for serious injury or death in the event of COVID-19 infection due to age and/or underlying medical conditions."
