The Maldives is a chain of 1190 small coral islands, grouped into 26 atolls. Fishing has long been the life blood of the Maldivian economy. [5] Today it still employs half the Maldivian workforce. Formerly, Maldives shipped 90 percent of its fishing catch of tuna in dried form to Sri Lanka. [6]
The daily catch mainly depends on the seasons. Triangular sailed dhoni were used in the past, while mechanized fishing dhoanis are now used. Traditionally, fishermen set out at dawn in search of bait fish, which were caught and kept alive in a specially prepared compartment of the dhoani. Eight or nine men did the actual fishing.
