The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is a sport utility vehicle manufactured and marketed across a single generation by Jeep in the United States from 1983 (model year 1984) through 2001 — and globally through 2014. It was available in two- or four-door, five-passenger, front-engine, rear- or four-wheel drive configurations.
The AX15 built by Aisin was used in Jeeps with the AMC 242 (4.0L) Inline 6 engine, as well as the AMC 258 (4.2L) Inline 6 engine and AMC (2.5L) Straight 4 engine. This included vehicles such as the Cherokee(XJ), Comanche (MJ), and Wrangler (YJ and TJ) and 1994-1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ as well as the 1st and 2nd generations of the Dodge Dakota.
Transmissions from Jeep wranglers Length: 23.5" (I6), 24.8" (V6). It features a 14mm hex fill plug on the passenger side and a 17mm hex drain plug on the bottom (with a strong magnet for attracting metal flakes). Gear ratios:
26-tooth input gear, 1¼" intermediate shaft and 2.42:1 low range, 3" input hole; 29-tooth input gear, 1¼" intermediate shaft and 2.46:1 low range, 4" input hole, Dana 20 case; The normal (3") input Dana 18s are interchangeable, but the input gear must match the transfer case. The "big hole" (4" input) Dana 18 is transmission-interchangeable ...
When in "4-Low" mode the front and rear axles are locked together and power is sent to all four-wheels through a 2.92:1 gear reduction in the power transfer unit; providing a crawl ratio of 56:1 for four cylinder Jeep Cherokees and a 47.8:1 crawl ratio for six-cylinder Cherokees. All Cherokees with this system have a raised ride height of one inch.
Neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio. The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep's Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle.
The 45RFE was introduced in the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 1999, it is notable for including three planetary gearsets rather than the two normally used in a 4-speed automatic. It also features three multiple disc input clutches, three multiple disc holding clutches, and a dual internal filter system (one primary filter for transmission sump, one for the fluid cooler return system).
Crawl ratio is a term used in the automotive world to describe the highest gear ratio that a vehicle is capable of. Note that gear ratio, also known as speed ratio, of a gear train is defined as the ratio of the angular velocity of the input gear to the angular velocity of the output gear, and thus a higher gear ratio implies a larger speed reduction, i.e. the input speed is reduced more at ...
