The Chicago Tool Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in the United States that help individuals borrow from an inventory of thousands of items that range from basic hand tools and table saws to ice cream makers and camping equipment. [2] Chicago Tool Library was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Chicago.
Planning for the library grew out of studies beginning in 2003 by a faculty task force, because other campus libraries, primarily the Regenstein Library, were running out of space for new books. In 2005, the board of trustees approved building a high-density storage facility next to the Regenstein building. [ 3 ]

The Grainger Engineering Library was dedicated on the 59th anniversary of the University of Illinois Foundation, October 14, 1994. The proceedings, entitled a "Gateway to a New Era", established the largest engineering library in the country, with over 92,000 square feet (8,500 m 2 ) holding more than 300,000 volumes. [ 4 ]
The library was located in the Scoville Institute building at 834 Lake Street, and replaced a private subscription library housed in that building since 1888. The Scoville Institute remained the primary library location for over 50 years. [2] In 1961, the community approved a bond issue to construct a new library to replace the Scoville Institute.

By the 1960s the library had outgrown the space available, and voters approved a referendum to construct a new library. The new facility of what is now the Cook Memorial Public Library District opened directly behind the Cook House in 1968. [3] The building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2001. [1]
