The State Correctional Institution – Coal Township, commonly referred to as SCI Coal Township, is a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections prison. Thomas McGinley is its superintendent. SCI Coal Township houses about 2,300 inmates. [1]
The Chester County Prison was built in 1959 to replace the previous county jail, which was declared unsafe in 1951. The new prison was designed to support medium and maximum security prisoners, with separate housing for male and female inmates, as well as juveniles. In 1983, parts of the prison were renovated and expanded.
The jail is 12 stories tall across eight floors and multiple basements. It has 628 cells for United States Marshal Service pre-trial inmates, primarily from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the District of New Jersey and the District of Delaware. Federal Detention Center Philadelphia is also a United States Parole Commission Revocation Site.
Pennsylvania's last execution was carried out in July 1999. The execution complex for Pennsylvania is on the grounds of the State Correctional Institution – Rockview. [5] Many male death row inmates are housed at the State Correctional Institution – Somerset, [6] while some are housed at the State Correctional Institution – Phoenix. [7]
Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility (CFCF) houses approximately 2,000 male inmates of all custody levels. The facility was named in honor of Warden Patrick N. Curran and Deputy Warden Robert F. Fromhold, who were murdered at Holmesburg Prison on May 31, 1973. They are the only PDP staff known to have been killed in the line of duty.
