Allen Sarlo (born January 9, 1958) is an American surfer, most prominently known as one of the original members of the Z-Boys surf and skateboarding team. [1] Surfing Magazine recognized him as the first to "kill" a wave. The aggressive and slashing style of surfing he pioneered during the 1970's earned him the nickname "Wave Killer".
He was serving two-and-a-half years on drug charges in Hawaii during the production of Dogtown and Z-Boys and was released in 2002. The movie brought Adams back into the limelight and led to endorsement deals for him. [22] As of 2005, Adams claimed to be drug-free and spoke to children at local schools about his past struggles. [8]
Engblom also played a cameo part in 2005's Lords of Dogtown as a race starter. In the same film, character Skip Engblom was played by Heath Ledger. [2] In 2023, Engblom was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. [3]
Dogtown won Director's and Audience Awards for documentary at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Peralta also directed Riding Giants, a 2004 documentary of the history of modern big wave surfing and tow-in surfing. Following that, Peralta wrote the screenplay for the dramatic re-telling of the Dogtown days with Lords of Dogtown (2005).
