Cortez (/ ˈ k ɔːr t ɛ z / ⓘ) is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. [1] The city population was 8,766 at the 2020 United States Census .
The route begins in the south at its intersection with US 160 in the eastern portion of the city of Cortez. The route winds northward through the towns of Dolores, Rico, Sawpit, Placerville, Norwood, and Redvale before terminating at the junction with SH 141 about four miles (6.4 km) east of Naturita.

Rico is located in eastern Dolores County in the valley of the Dolores River. Colorado State Highway 145 passes through the town as it follows the river, leading southwest 48 miles (77 km) to Cortez and northeast over Lizard Head Pass 27 miles (43 km) to Telluride.
