A popular position held by many Catholics, derived from the writings of Jerome, is that Joseph was the husband of Mary, but that references to Jesus' "brothers" should be understood to mean cousins. Such usage is prevalent throughout history, and occurs elsewhere in the Bible.
The History of Joseph the Carpenter (Historia Josephi Fabri Lignari) is a compilation of traditions concerning Mary (mother of Jesus), Joseph, and the Holy Family, probably composed in Byzantine Egypt in Greek in the late sixth or early seventh centuries, but surviving only in Coptic and Arabic language translation [1] (apart from several Greek papyrus fragments [2]).
That this verse refers to Joseph as Mary's husband does not conflict or mean a change in circumstances from Matthew 1:18, where he is merely her betrothed. The betrothal of the period was a formal arrangement and the couple can reasonably be considered husband and wife while betrothed.
Second dream: In Matthew 2:13, Joseph is warned to leave Bethlehem and flee to Egypt. Third dream: In Matthew 2:19–20, while in Egypt, Joseph is told that it is safe to go back to Israel. It was customary in that time and place to celebrate marriage in two stages, the first being the contractual arrangements culminating in consent or "betrothal".

In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads: And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. The World English Bible translates the passage as: Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. For a collection of other versions see ...
In the Book of Genesis [5] Joseph is Jacob's eleventh son and Rachel's first son, and known in the Hebrew Bible as Yossef ben-Yaakov. [6] In the New Testament the most notable two are Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus; and Joseph of Arimathea, a secret disciple of Jesus who supplied the tomb in which Jesus was buried.
