Aurora Theatre Company has a small, intimate performance space, and has been referred to as “chamber theatre.” In 2001, the company moved to a dedicated custom-designed 150-seat theater in downtown Berkeley, situated immediately adjacent to the Berkeley Repertory Theatre .
The Shotgun Players was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Patrick Dooley. [1] Dooley and ten other actors formed the company in La Val's Pizza Shop. [2] Before moving to a permanent location at the Ashby Stage in 2004, Shotgun Players performed in 44 different spaces. [3]

The company won the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 1997. The theater added the 600-seat proscenium Roda Theatre next door to its existing 400-seat asymmetrical thrust stage in 2001, as well as opening its Berkeley Rep School of Theatre the same year. Its current Artistic Director is Johanna Pfaelzer, who took on the position in September 2019.
