In December 2023 as a result of the 2023 Polish parliamentary election, Donald Tusk's cabinet, comprising of Civic Coalition, Poland 2050, the Polish People's Party, and the New Left, began governing the country. Tusk's coalition does not have enough votes to bypass the presidential veto, for which it would need 276 votes. [2]
Poland's Presidency of the Council in 2025 is the first nation in the thirteenth trio of Council Presidencies together with Denmark and Cyprus, which will last until 1 July 2026. It is Poland's second Presidency of the council, after its first in 2011. Poland succeeded Hungary as president on 1 January 2025.
The presidency's function is to chair meetings of the council, determine its agendas, set a work program and facilitate dialogue both at Council meetings and with other EU institutions. The presidency is currently, as of January 2025, held by Poland. Three successive presidencies are known as presidency trios.
The 2024 Civic Coalition presidential primary were the third Polish presidential primary election after the 2010 and 2019 primaries for the Civic Platform party. [1] The primary was organized by the coalition following the decision by Donald Tusk not to run for president again (he lost in a runoff to Lech Kaczyński in 2005 and has served as prime minister from 2007 to 2014 and since 2023).
