Beale Street was created in 1841 by entrepreneur and developer Robertson Topp (1807–1876), who soon named it later in the decade for Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a military hero from the Mexican–American War.
The success of Beale Street earned John Elkington many honors, including being named by Memphis Magazine in 2011 as one of "The Memphis 35" – people whose influence over the past 35 years "was critical to the growth and evolution of our city." [5] Three years later, the Memphis Flyer tapped him as one of "25 Who Shaped Memphis: 1989-2014."
The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, [4] and was included in an enlargement of the National Historic Landmark District of Beale Street in 1993. Adjacent to the church, a plaza dedicated to Ida B. Wells was established in 2021. [5]
The South Main district has been featured in many films, sometimes as just background scenery in Memphis, sometimes masquerading as an older version of Beale Street.
