St. Joseph was first platted in 1829, and the first lighthouse at the site, located on the shore, was built in 1832. Construction began on harbor piers in 1836, and by 1848 a beacon light had been established on the pier. The onshore lighthouse was replaced in 1859, and a new pierhead beacon was constructed on the south pier in 1870.

St. Joseph was a boomtown founded in 1835 on the shores of St. Joseph Bay that briefly became the largest community in Florida before being abandoned after less than eight years. A yellow fever epidemic in 1841 ended its brief period of prosperity and the abandoned remnants of the town were destroyed by a storm surge in 1844.
It is a 15-mile long spit, extending northward from Cape San Blas between the Gulf of Mexico to the west and St. Joseph Bay to the east. It is 6 miles west of Port St. Joe at its closest point. The peninsula is also known as St. Joseph Spit. The northern two-thirds of the peninsula is known as St. Joseph Point. [1]
The Port St Joe Dock and Terminal Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, owns a pier 2,426 feet in length in St. Joseph Bay, at Port St. Joe, Fla., together with a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, extending from a connection with the tracks of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad Company to the end of the pier.
