Batesville is a city in Panola County, Mississippi, United States.The population was 7,523 at the 2020 census, up from 7,463 at the 2010 census.. Batesville is one of two county seats which the legislature established for Panola County, related to a longstanding rivalry between towns on either side of the Tallahatchie River; the other is Sardis, located north of the river.
Batesville was named after the plantation of William Michael Bates, who moved to the area from South Carolina in 1845. [2] A post office operated under the name Batesville from 1854 to 1942. [3] Fort Browder, a small wooden fort, was built near Batesville to use as protection during the Creek War of 1836.
The Batesville Commercial Historic District encompasses about four city blocks of the historic downtown of Batesville, Arkansas. This area's current appearance is largely the result of development between about 1880 and the 1940s, although it includes a portion of Arkansas' oldest platted Main Street, dating to 1821.
