The Daytona Beach course hosted its last event in 1958 and, in 1959 the first Daytona 500 was held at the new superspeedway. Daytona Speed Week on the beach course continued through 1961 without using the adjoining public road, with time/distance record attempts held for the standing mile and flying mile in multiple classes.

The track was built in 1959 by NASCAR founder William "Bill" France Sr. to host racing that was held at the former Daytona Beach Road Course. His banked design permitted higher speeds and gave fans a better view of the cars. The speedway is operated by NASCAR pursuant to a lease with the City of Daytona Beach on the property that runs until 2054.
The Jungle Trail (pre-1945 State Road 252) was part of A1A in northeastern Indian River County, Florida. The narrow, 7 + 1 ⁄ 2-mile-long (12.1 km) road is located between Old Winter Beach Road and the current A1A, along the western side of Orchid Island, and is unpaved. [8]
