[2] In the premiere episode, set in the year 1999, nuclear waste stored on the Moon's far side explodes, knocking the Moon out of orbit and sending it, as well as the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, hurtling uncontrollably into space.
The episode was adapted in the first Year One Space: 1999 novel Breakaway by E. C. Tubb, published in 1975. Tubb, an experienced science-fiction author, retained the basic storyline and made significant changes in content and dialogue.
