The Vermilion Lakes are a series of lakes located immediately west of Banff, Alberta, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The three lakes are formed in the Bow River valley, in the Banff National Park, at the foot of Mount Norquay. They are located between the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks.
The park is in Breitung Township, on the shore of Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota's Vermilion Range. It has become a popular tourist site, often visited on the way to and from Ely and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. [citation needed] The state park is operated under the Department of Natural Resources.
The lake is near the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The Minnesota DNR ranks Lake Vermilion as the fifth largest lake by surface area for bodies of water entirely within Minnesota borders. The surface area of Lake Vermilion is 39,271 acres (158.9 km 2) and has a maximum depth of 76 feet (23 m). [3]
The park was first constructed in the early 1950s, and opened to the public on May 29, 1953. Vermilion Provincial Park was the 7th park integrated into the Alberta Parks system. [1] One of the key features of the park is that the Vermilion River was dammed to create an artificial lake (the 6.3 km long Vermilion Park Lake).

The Pike Bay of Lake Vermilion is located along the southeast corner of Greenwood Township. Everett Bay, Big Bay, Daisy Bay, Greenwood Bay, and Frazer Bay of Lake Vermilion are located within the township. Little East Creek flows through the northern part of the township. Wolf Creek flows between Wolf Lake and Smart Bay.
