The field of speech-language pathology is practiced by a clinician known as a speech-language pathologist (SLP) [1] or a speech and language therapist (SLT) [2]. SLPs also play an important role in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), often in collaboration with pediatricians and psychologists.
Its first patron, in 1948, was King George VI, who received speech therapy for his stammer. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother continued this support after his death in 1952 and become the college's patron in 1959. [3] In 1990, speech therapists changed their name and title to "speech and language therapists". [4]
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) may provide individual therapy for the child to assist with speech production problems such as stuttering. They may consult with the child's teacher about ways in which the child might be accommodated in the classroom, or modifications that might be made in instruction or environment.
It is not yet its own professional degree, thus it only assists the voice medicine team. Usually a person practicing vocology is a voice coach with additional training in the voice medical arts, a prepared voice/singing teacher, or a speech pathologist with additional voice performance training—so they can better treat the professional voice user.
Voice therapy consists of techniques and procedures that target vocal parameters, such as vocal fold closure, pitch, volume, and quality. This therapy is provided by speech-language pathologists and is primarily used to aid in the management of voice disorders, [1] or for altering the overall quality of voice, as in the case of transgender voice therapy.
