First sign for the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais. County State-Aid Highway 12 (CSAH 12), also known as the Gunflint Trail, or County Road 12 (CR 12), is a 57-mile (92 km) paved roadway and National Scenic Byway in Cook County, Minnesota, that begins in Grand Marais and ends at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), near the U.S. border with Ontario.
The trail was planned and built in the early 1970s by the Minnesota Rovers Outing Club with the help of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the US Forest Service. It was the first long-distance, wilderness backpacking and hiking trail in Minnesota planned and constructed by volunteers.

The Superior National Forest features a long segment of the 4,800-mile North Country National Scenic Trail from just south of Burntside Lake by Ely to just south of Temperance River State Park near Schroeder. This segment includes (from West to East) the Kekekabic Trail, Border Route Trail, and Superior Hiking Trail.
The Cross River flows through the center, or middle of Schroeder. Schroeder is located 30 miles (48 km) southwest of the city of Grand Marais; and 53 miles (85 km) northeast of the city of Two Harbors. Minnesota Highway 61 serves as a main route in the community. Temperance River State Park and the Superior Hiking Trail are both nearby.
Another 3-mile (4.8 km) segment runs from Schroeder to Tofte through Temperance River State Park. The trail resumes at the other side of Tofte for a 7.3-mile (11.7 km) segment that goes to Lutsen. Lastly there is a 1-mile (1.6 km) completed segment outside Two Harbors and a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) section leading into Grand Marais. [1]
