The Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) is located in Muthorai near Ooty, in South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. [1] It is part of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), which is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Atomic Energy . It was opened in 1966 with a 31-inch (790 mm) Tinsley reflector, with a 40-inch (1,000 mm) Baker-Schmidt astrometric reflector following in 1972, to extend the parallax work of the McCormick Observatory, which was suffering from light pollution from growing Charlottesville, Virginia by this time.

Leander McCormick Observatory in 1890. The Leander McCormick Observatory is one of the astronomical observatories operated by the Department of Astronomy [3] of the University of Virginia, and is situated just outside Charlottesville, Virginia (US) in Albemarle County on the summit of Mount Jefferson (also known as Observatory Hill).
The first cosmic ray experiment was started in 1955 by B. V. Sreekantan by setting up cloud chambers that heralded the beginning of research at the Cosmic Ray Laboratory (CRL) in Ooty. [ citation needed ] The next decade witnessed a variety of experiments involving high energy interactions and extensive air shower studies in this laboratory.
