Spike works on a cure for Drusilla. Dalton, a vampire transcriber, is unable to decipher the book stolen from the library that contains a cure. Drusilla informs Spike that they need a decryption key because the book is in code. Buffy witnesses Dalton stealing an object from a mausoleum, but he escapes when she is distracted by another vampire.
In the episode, Angel and Spike duel over a mystical grail to decide which one will be the champion, as flashbacks show the complex relationship between the two vampires. Guest star Juliet Landau reprises her role as Drusilla , and Christian Kane makes an uncredited appearance at the end of the episode playing Lindsey McDonald .
Spike, exhilarated by the thrill of the fight, realizes that the way to get Drusilla back is not via a love spell, but to become the demon he once was, whom she loved. Willow tells Buffy that Cordelia survived the fall, but is in the hospital, having lost a lot of blood.
