The largest southern spruce–fir stand is located in the higher elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains on the Tennessee-North Carolina border, stretching from roughly Kuwohi in the west to Mount Guyot in the east. Another significant spruce–fir stand is found atop the Black Mountains, and includes a large stand atop Mount Mitchell.
The Boreal Mountains and Plateaus Ecoregion is unique among other British Columbia ecoregions in that it contains several volcanoes of late Tertiary and Pleistocene age.
