The cable was produced and laid by Prysmian Group and Nexans SA. [4] The system consists of two bipolar high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables with a transmission capacity of 200 MW and an operating voltage of 250 kV of each, and a metal return cable. It has a total transmission capacity of 400 MW.
These links, which all consist of overhead line sections on land together with submarine cables are: Two parallel 500 kV AC circuits from south of Powell River to Vancouver Island in two cable and three overhead sections with reactor station on Texada Island, running from Malaspina substation near Sechelt to Dunsmuir substation near Qualicum Beach;
The Trans Bay Cable is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater transmission cable interconnection between San Francisco, California and Pittsburg, California. [1] The 53 mi (85 km) cable under San Francisco Bay and through the Carquinez Strait can transmit 400 megawatts of power at a DC voltage of ±200 kV, enough to provide 40% of San Francisco's peak power needs.
Land cables and submarine cables were installed between 2020 and 2023. In 2023 the cable laying contractor Prysmian announced that the land cables and 870 km of the 1250 km dual subsea cable had been laid with the remaining 380 km subsea cable to be laid between April and July 2023. [16] The undersea section of the link was completed in July 2023.
A €1.2 billion cable contract was awarded in February 2022, [18] [19] and substations contract in April. [20] [19] In July 2022, the project reached financial close, allowing early construction works to begin later in 2022. [10] In October 2022, the cable manufacturer Prysmian started production of the 725km cable. [21]
