Braking systems in the 14-bolt differentials manufactured until the 1998 model year predominantly incorporated drum brakes. [4] However, select 1999 models with the 14-bolt configuration received upgrades to disc brakes; for example, the new Silverado/Sierra 2500 trucks.
For model year 2000 - 2004 trucks, the F-150 7700 offered this axle and the F-250 light duty was discontinued. At least till 2011 the 12 bolt semi float was still found with the heavy duty f-150. Gear ratios were 3.73 in 4x4 and either the 3.73 or 4.10 in the two-wheel-drive models. This was available in both limited slip and standard variations.
The M1009 Blazer used 10-bolt axles (front and rear) featuring 3.08:1 gears. The rear axle was equipped with an Eaton Automatic Differential Lock (ADL) while the front was a standard open differential. The M1008 trucks used open Dana 60 front axles, with the M1028 and M1031 variations often having a Trac-Lok limited slip.
Ford versions are driver's side differential drop, reverse-cut gears, and kingpin knuckles up to 1991. The later axles have ball joints. Ford Dana 60 axles mostly feature 35 spline inner axle shafts, but some are 30 spline. Larger brakes and 35 spline outer shafts were made standard in 2005.
On all pickup trucks, the model line was fitted with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes (4-wheel disc brakes were exclusive to the C3500HD [18]). The Ausco-Lambert brake is self-energizing. It holds one ring rigidly and lets the other rotate freely, without a stop. The rotation direction is arranged so the direction of free rotation is the same as the hollow brake "disc". Thus, the disc tends to pull the ring in the direction that further applies the brake.
