Phosphate mining in South Carolina declined rapidly in the 1890s, when mining of the higher-grade deposits in central Florida began. The central Florida district has provided the majority of US phosphate ever since. US production of phosphate rock peaked in 1980 at 54.4 million metric tons.
The Peace River Phosphate Co. began mining in the Winter of 1889, and most of the ore was shipped to Punta Gorda via the Florida Southern, where it was loaded onto ships for export to Europe. The assemblage was discovered during phosphate mining, which began in the late 1940s. [1] Haile sites are found in the Alachua Formation.
