It is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and, as of May 2020, owned and operated 186 hospitals and approximately 2,400 sites of care, including surgery centers, freestanding emergency rooms, urgent care centers and physician clinics in 20 states and the United Kingdom. German Hospital was originally established in 1886 in a brick farmhouse near present-day East 23rd Street and Holmes Street. A new hospital building was built at the same location in 1911 and was renamed Research Hospital in 1918. On August 11, 1963, Research Medical Center opened at its present-day location at Meyer Boulevard and Prospect Avenue.

Since then, the hospital has undergone multiple additions, including a $15 million, 15,000-square-foot addition in 2014 to enhance the pediatrics, medical surgery, and intensive care departments. [ 3 ] In 2021, the hospital added an additional 32 patient beds as part of a $14.5 million, 24,000 square foot expansion. [ 2 ]

The $7-million facility opened in September 1979 as Capital Medical Center. In September 1980, GCC was purchased by HCA Healthcare and became part of a multi-billion-dollar corporation. It was renamed HCA Tallahassee Community Hospital in January 1982. [2] In 1982 and 1983, gained a CT Scan service and opened its family center.
