The first post office opened with the name Huron, but soon closed. In 1860 a new post office was opened with the name Catville but changed its name to New Boston by 1868. Other early settlements included Belden, platted in 1857 by Frances J. Belden and now known as Willow, and Waltz, platted in 1872 by Joseph Waltz.
Business US Highway 10 (Bus.US 10) is an east–west business loop running for about 2.1 miles (3.4 km) in Reed City.Running eastbound, the business loop starts at the corner of US 10 and Chestnut Street and runs southward along the latter into downtown.
The area around the highway is mixed businesses and office parks north to Knapp Street, and then residential north of there. At Plainfield Avenue, M-44 meets Conn. M-44 and crosses the Grand River.
