The Saginaw Central City Historic Residential District contains approximately three hundred and twenty structures located within a forty block area. About nine percent of the structures in the district were built before 1875; these are primarily Carpenter Gothic residences. The bulk of the houses date from the mid-1870s through the mid-1890s.
In 1872 or 1873 he emigrated to the United States, along with his wife Bertha and their three sons, Emil, Carl, and Otto. Roethke settled in Saginaw, where he opened a market garden and florist shop. In 1882, he purchased the 20-acre parcel where these houses now stand, and constructed a series of greenhouses to support the business.
