The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model codes E90 (saloon), E91 (estate, marketed as 'Touring'), E92 (coupé) and E93 (convertible). The model was introduced in December 2004, [ 8 ] and produced by BMW until October 2013 and is often collectively referred to as the E90 or E9x.
An early compact executive car produced in Germany was the 1966 BMW 02 Series, followed by the BMW 3 Series in 1975. In 1965 Audi introduced their first compact executive model Audi 72 . The 1983 Mercedes-Benz W201 range (also known as the "Mercedes-Benz 190") was the first compact executive car from Mercedes-Benz. [ 16 ]
The terms E-segment or executive car do not have a one-to-one equivalent in the American car classification. However, if a modern E-segment sedan by a European brand is sold in the U.S., it falls into the category of both mid-size and full-size sedan, usually a mid-size luxury sedan.
Executive car is a British term for a large car, and is considered equivalent to the European E-segment and American full-size classifications. [1] Executive cars are larger than compact executive cars (and the non-luxury equivalent mid-size cars ), but smaller than luxury saloons / full-size luxury sedans .
A compact executive car or a compact luxury car is a premium car larger than a premium compact and smaller than an executive car. In European classification, compact executive cars are part of the D-segment .
The seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range consists of the BMW G20 (sedan version) and BMW G21 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring') compact executive cars. The G20/G21 has been in production since mid-October 2018 [ 5 ] with a facelift in July 2022 and is often collectively referred to as the G20.
