I just ran it through Mitchell's and for replacing the evaporator core and compressor... 5.0 labor hours, which they estimate at $495 and $1,200 in parts ($900 for the compressor and $300 for the evap core). So without adding in charging, or anything else that may need to be replaced, they are estimating around $1,700.

A 3-3 1/2 ton, 12 SEER compressor costs a repair person [who buys wholesale] about $350-$450 (typical 3 ton COPELAND compressor used by most AC units). You often replace the dryer on the unit too (the big round tube soldered in on the line), that's another $50-$80, and usually the thing that causes your compressor to go bad is the condensor fan ...

    4) most importantly, is it a permit required job. This will drive the cost up on any small job. IME, if its a quote for the replacement of a unit disconnect only, no unit wiring or conduit necessary, its only about an hour job. Kinda high for $250, considering the disconnect is only about $30-40 at Home Depot.

It can’t be that hard. F’ing AC shop was throwing parts at it to fix it in the quote. Ended up it was a bad connection on the compressor connection. And the clutch needed to be re-shimmed because the clearance was too high and clutch couldn’t grab. All it cost was $18 for a connector and about 20 minutes of my time.

Bought from R&Y A/C Compressor Inc. The compressor was less than the cost for the clutch!! There are several posts on how to do this. Most say to remove more than you need. I did this: Remove the fan (2 bolts on top, one in the center of the bottom. Undo the connections for the fan (near the top) and for the AC clutch (on the side near the bottom).

Sounds like we have the same setup (split system), where you have a compressor outside and a furnace inside. It cost me $7,500. Middle of the road unit, no variable speed compressor, no bells or whistles. While my buddy in Newport Beach had to replace his about the same time. Same 3.5t load. His, cost nearly $20k, due to regulatory requirements.

$300 each? That is crazy. And the Compressor Saver starter kit also runs about $35-50. I have one right now that I took off our old unit that was replaced that I got on Ebay for $40 shipped. Installing both should not cost more than $150-200 at the max parts & labor. But it sounded like he was just a "parts re-placer" not a true service repairman.

Our 26-year-old Carrier rooftop AC/heat pump finally died the other week and refused to turn on, so our home warranty company got a repair service to check it out. They're saying it's not repairable, so they will replace the entire unit, which is fine with us except that they want $1225 on top of the $55 co-pay for non-warranty work--bracket ...

AC work can be hard and the tools to do it right can be expensive. Dumping a $10 can or two in an getting some cold air is better than $1K or so to chase down a small condenser leak, replace and do a vacuum and recharge at a repair shop, especially on an older car where it may not be financially worth having it professionally repaired.
