In August 2014, Lennon Lacy, a student attending West Bladen High School, was found dead, hanging from the frame of a swing set in the center of a mobile home community. [5] The death was initially declared a suicide by North Carolina's Chief Medical Examiner, but Lacy's family believed that he had been lynched . [ 5 ]
In the early 1900s, there were 328 plantations identified in North Carolina from extant records. [ 10 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] The Sloop Point plantation in Pender County, built in 1729, is the oldest surviving plantation house and the second oldest house surviving in North Carolina, after the Lane House (built in 1718–1719 and not part of a plantation).
Bladenboro Township contains the tributaries of Big Swamp, and include Bryant Swamp and Horsepen Branch. These streams are part of the larger Lumber River basin. It is one of 15 townships within the county. Bladenboro Township is 63.79 square miles (165.2 km 2) [1] in size, and is located in southwestern Bladen County.
Bladen County was formed in 1734 as Bladen Precinct of Bath County, from New Hanover Precinct. [5] It was named for Martin Bladen, a member of the Board of Trade. [6] With the abolition of Bath County in 1739, all of its constituent precincts became counties.
It is one of 15 townships within the county. It is 94 square miles (240 km 2) in total area, and is located in east-central Bladen County. [1]In 2022, the estimated population of the township was 1,722.
