The Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship was established by Bishop Paul S. Morton Sr. in 1994 within New Orleans, Louisiana, [2] though it began as a movement within the National Baptist Convention, USA in 1992. [5] From 25,000 to 30,000 attended the first conference of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship in 1994. [9]
Born into a Christian family, his father pastored two congregations, one in Windsor, Ontario and the other in Detroit, Michigan. [2]In 1972, Morton moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and to the Greater St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church (now known as Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church) under the pastorate of Reverend Percy Simpson, where he became an associate pastor.
They had two children. Their first child Kenneth Wayne Hagin, known as Kenneth Hagin Jr., was born on September 3, 1939. [8] A daughter, Patricia (Hagin) Harrison, was born 19 months later on March 27, 1941. [8] His son Kenneth Wayne Hagin is currently the pastor of Rhema Bible Church and President of Kenneth Hagin Ministries. [9]
In 1994, Long was given the title "bishop" in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, a group of black Baptist churches that embraced charismatic practices. [11] Long's sermons, writings and teachings emphasize a "chain of command" [12] between certain superiors and subordinates characterized by "respect, submission and obedience".
The church was founded in 1939 in Scottdale as Travelers Rest Baptist Church. [1] In 1983, it moved to Decatur and adopted its current name. Eddie Long took over as pastor in 1987. At the time, the church had only 300 members. In 1994, New Birth became a member of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship. [2]

James Montgomery Boice (July 7, 1938 – June 15, 2000) was an American Reformed Christian theologian, Bible teacher, author, and speaker known for his writing on the authority of Scripture and the defense of Biblical inerrancy. He was also the Senior Minister of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia from 1968 until his death. [1]
