Yummy: the Last Days of a Southside Shorty is a 2010 graphic novel by Greg Neri with art by Randy DuBurke, published by Lee and Low Books.The story is about Robert "Yummy" Sandifer, who was eleven years old in 1994 when he became a fugitive from justice after killing a neighbor girl while he was shooting at somebody else during a gang initiation.
Robert Sandifer was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 12, 1983. Sandifer's mother, Lorina Sandifer, had over 30 arrests while prostituting, [ 7 ] many of which were drug-related. Sandifer's father, Robert Akins, was absent throughout Sandifer's life due to incarceration for a felony gun charge.
In 1994, 11-year-old member Robert “Yummy” Sandifer shot and killed a 14-year-old female pedestrian, Shavon Dean, with a 9mm semiautomatic pistol by mistake. The gang leader sent out teenaged brothers, Derrick and Cragg Hardaway, to get rid of Yummy. The brothers lured Yummy into an underpass, and shot him twice in the back of his head.
DuBurke made his debut in the comics industry with the story "A Life in the Day" as part of the DC Comics Bonus Book [3] program in Doom Patrol vol. 2 #9 (June 1988). [4] He drew the "Black Canary" feature in Action Comics Weekly in 1988 [5] and contributed to the various volumes of Paradox Press' The Big Book Of series from 1994 to 2000. [4]
