Plus, if you stuck with the BA 10/5 (assuming the 89 islands had the ba), it probably wouldnt last too long, so yea i'd swap to a 3550 or at least a ax15. But not a bad option. Pick up a parts jeep with the 4.0 and ax15, rebuild/stroke the engine, swap over the entire drivetrain and pull the EFI.

The stock lines that went into the 4.0 high output fuel rail are plug and play for the 5.2 fuel rail. Just do some rerouting along the firewall, plug them in and you are done. The 1991 jeep wrangler already utilizes a high-pressure fuel pump. The fuel pressure is regulated on the fuel rail side of the 4.0 engines.

The 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum engines have the exact same mounting points and locations, since the blocks are the same. What that means is, if you swap in a 5.2 and later on decide you want to bump up to a 5.9, the 5.9 will simply bolt right in to the motor mounts you installed for the 5.2 without any issues.

The 5.3 is a much better swap than a 4.0. It weighs less and makes 30% more power in stock form. I have heard of some saying 25 mpg highway with a 4l60e, but would guess 20 to be more likely. I have managed 18 highway with my magnum swap. That's about 2 mpg better than my old 4.0 ever did.

In my opinion, the best motor to upgrade into a Wrangler is a 2014 & newer LT1 (lighter than a stock Jeep straight 6). My second choice would be a LS if money was an issue. My third choice would be an older 350 if money was really tight. Some guys like the old school style of a carbed engine.
