Burns & McDonnell is an American multinational construction, architecture and engineering firm based in Kansas City, Missouri, and has 100% employee stock ownership.It was established in 1898 by engineers Clinton Sumner Burns and Robert Emmett McDonnell.
The engineering firm Burns & McDonnell designed the complex, which was constructed in two phases in 1951 and 1955. The facility originally included a turbine generator building, a water intake structure, and an oil heating building.
In 1971, Armco Steel purchased Kansas City-based engineering firm Burns & McDonnell; however, in 1985, employees of Burns & McDonnell secured a loan to buy the company from Armco. [9] In 1978, Armco Steel was renamed Armco, Inc. It moved its headquarters to New Jersey in 1985. In 1982, a recession threatened the U.S. steel industry. [10]
Clinton Sumner Burns was born at Waverly Iowa on October 26, 1871, the son of Heman Hoit Burns (1842-1917) [2] and Laura Root Burns (1845-1881). [3] [4] His early education was obtained in the public schools at Port Byron NY where he lived with his grandmother and at Cornell University. [4]
