St. Raphael's Syro-Malabar Catholic Cathedral Church, also called St. Raphael Cathedral, [1] is an Eastern Catholic church located in Palakkad district, Kerala, India. [2] It is the cathedral church of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palghat (Eparchia Palghatensis), which was created in 1974 through the papal bull titled "Apostolico requirente" of Pope Paul VI.
The parish church of San Sebastian, located in Sultanpet in the city of Palakkad, is the cathedral of this diocese. At the time of its erection it was the 31st Catholic diocese in Kerala [2] and 167th in India. [3] The diocese is almost coterminous with the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palghat.
The eparchy covers an area of 28515 km 2 and it comprises the civil district of Palakkad in Kerala and the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Karur and Tirupur in Tamil Nadu. At the time of the inauguration of the Eparchy it had a total of 16 parishes and 8 stations. The number of diocesan priests was 14 and that of the adherents was 20810.
