In June 1993 parent company Aspro Travel was acquired by the Airtours Group [1] for £20m. Operations under the IEA name continued to the end of October 1993. The Inter European Airways fleet was then either disposed of (Boeing 737-300/400 aircraft) or merged into the Airtours International fleet and repainted into their livery.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737-236(A), named River Orrin, was flown by British Airtours, a wholly owned subsidiary of British Airways. It had 131 passengers and six crew on the manifest. During the takeoff roll, a loud thump was heard, and takeoff was aborted. An engine failure had generated a fire and the captain ordered evacuation.
The aircraft were operated with Skyservice USA titles and wore the livery of Airtours International Airways, SunTrips' parent company. In 2000, the Skyservice USA titles were replaced with SunTrips titles on the aircraft. Later, Ryan would operate SunTrips flights using Boeing 757 aircraft in Ryan's own livery.
