The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) is a voluntary association of national collegiate and post-graduate honor societies. It was established on December 30, 1925 by six organizations, including Alpha Omega Alpha , the Order of the Coif , Phi Beta Kappa , Phi Kappa Phi , Sigma Xi , and Tau Beta Pi .

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is an American academic honor society for college students. It was established in 1994 at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. NSCS has active chapters at nearly 300 colleges and universities in the United States. It is a Association of College Honor Societies member.
Sigma Tau Delta joined the Association of College Honor Societies in 1972. [4] By 2011, it had grown to 812 active chapters and 9,000 active members. [4] Literary honor society Lambda Iota Tau went dormant in 2016-2017, with many members joining Sigma Tau Delta. [3] [5] As of 2024, the society has chartered 850 chapters.
Elisha Parmelee, an alumnus of Yale College and Harvard College, passed through Williamsburg and took charters from the Phi Beta Kappa to establish branches of the society at these schools. A second chapter was founded at Yale College in late 1780; a third, at Harvard College in 1781; and a fourth, at Dartmouth College in 1787. [10]
