The March 1923 Texas Aggie urged, "If there is an A&M man in one-hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas." [2] The tradition of reading aloud the roll call of the dead began in 1924, with the addition of the tune "Taps" in 1927.
Many Texas A&M alumni served during World War I and by 1918, 49% of all Aggies were in military service, a higher proportion than that of any other American college or university. [19] In early September 1918, the entire senior class enlisted, and there were plans to send the younger students at staggered dates throughout the next year.
James Earl Rudder was born on May 6, 1910, in Eden, Texas, the fifth son to survive to adulthood of Dee Forest and Annie Rudder (nee Powell). [1] Rudder attended Eden High School, where he was a member of the first football team at the school, graduating in 1927. [2]
