The RER contains 257 stations, 33 of which are within the city of Paris, and runs over 602 km (374 mi) of track, including 81.5 km (50.6 mi) underground. Each line passes through the city almost wholly underground and on tracks dedicated to the RER, but some city center tracks are shared between line D and line B.

In 1987, the French government decided to build a TGV station at the airport, and in 1989 airport managers agreed to allow the construction of a joint TGV and RER station under Terminal 2, with the RER tracks being extended east and south of this original station. The new station, Aeroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV, opened on 24 November 1994.
May 1976: A new 13.5 km (8.4 mi) long branch from Aulnay-sous-Bois to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport is opened, linking the airport with Paris. December 1977: The Ligne de Sceaux is extended north 2 km (1.2 mi) from Luxembourg station to Châtelet-les Halles station and becomes the RER B.
CDG Express is a railway line currently under construction. It will connect Gare de l'Est in Paris and Charles de Gaulle Airport , aiming to alleviate congestion on the existing RER B line. Originally planned for 2006, the opening was pushed back several times, most recently to early 2027.
