The Putnamville Correctional Facility, located in Warren Township, Putnam County, near Greencastle, Indiana, is a medium-security prison for men located on 4,350 acres (17.6 km 2) in Putnam County, Indiana (the west-central part of the state, 3.8 miles West of U.S. Routes 231 and 40). [1] It currently houses approximately 2,400 inmates.
WSR is the second oldest prison in the state, only to Washington State Penitentiary. WSR has a capacity of approximately 720, and houses minimum, medium, and maximum custody inmates. [3] There are also extended family visit trailers for family style visits with immediate relatives, available to the entire Monroe complex.
Inmates began building the state's first prison, Central Prison, in 1870, and moved into the completed castle-like structure in December 1884. In 1881, the state leased two tracts of land near Raleigh for inmates to farm. State law 379, enacted in 1885, provided for the allowance of good time as an incentive for inmate cooperation.
