Non-printing characters or formatting marks are characters for content designing in word processors, which are not displayed at printing. It is also possible to customize their display on the monitor. The most common non-printable characters in word processors are pilcrow, space, non-breaking space, tab character etc. [1] [2]
A common use is to make a collapsible layout table, which always displays an introduction or summary, but hides the rest of the content from immediate view. The show/hide button is misplaced (see image; might be due to the fact that I did not design the collapsible table script with this kind of usage in mind.) The caption of the TOC in de collapsed state doesn't match the caption of TOCs which aren't generated by this template. The caption and border are doubled when the TOC is in it's expanded state.
