While map data should usually be stored on Commons (see mw:Help:Map data), until August 2018 only CC0 licences were not allowed. Because of this former restriction, this process was set up so that data with licences compatible with Wikipedia's CC-BY-SA-3.0 licencing (e.g. as CC-BY licences), they could be stored as subpages here on Wikipedia.
Maps are useful in presenting key facts within a geographical context and enabling a descriptive overview of a complex concept to be accessed easily and quickly. WikiProject Maps encourages the creation of free maps and their upload on Wikimedia Commons. On the project's pages can be found advice, tools, links to resources, and map conventions.
These SVG maps have user-editable sections (any text editor) to allow creation of more maps on more topics. Just paste in a list of states and values.
