The Curonian Spit is home to the highest moving (drifting) sand dunes in Europe. Their average height is 35 metres (115 ft), but some attain a height of 60 metres (200 ft). Curonian Spit National Park (Lithuanian: Kuršių nerijos nacionalinis parkas) is one of the five national parks in Lithuania. It was established in 1991 to protect the unique ecosystems of the Curonian Spit and Curonian Lagoon. The formation of the whole Curonian Spit dune ridge started in the 16–17th centuries due to massive deforestation. Blown by the sea wind, the sands started moving from the Baltic Sea inland, burying forests and villages. Eventually, locals started fighting the sand with barriers and planting of trees and grass.
Parnidis Landscape Reserve was created around the dune within the Curonian Spit National Park to preserve a unique natural dune landscape, including bare and forested land, as well as the coastal areas of the dunes at both the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. It is the only place with drifting dunes within the park. [2]

The Curonian Spit, a 98-kilometre (61 mi) long sandy dune (a spit) that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Intense logging activities in the 17th and 18th centuries resulted in the dunes moving towards the Lagoon, burying the oldest settlements in the process.
Rybachy (Russian: Рыба́чий, from Рыба́к, "Fisherman", German: Rossitten, Lithuanian: Rasytė) is a rural settlement in Zelenogradsky District of Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the Curonian Spit. As of 2010 it has about 839 residents. It was formerly known for the Rossitten Bird Observatory and the Rossitten gliding school.
