As per temple records, King Indradyumna of Avanti built the main temple of Jagannath at Puri. [2] The present temple was rebuilt from the eleventh century onwards, on the site of the pre-existing temples in the compound, but not the main Jagannath temple, and begun by Anantavarman Chodaganga, the first king of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Jagannath is venerated as Bhairava or Shiva, the consort of the goddess Vimala, by Shaivites and Shakta sects. [10] The priests of Jagannath Temple at Puri belong to the Shakta sect, although the Vaishnava sect's influence predominates. [57] As part of the triad, Balabhadra is also considered to be Shiva and Subhadra, a manifestation of Durga. [58]
