Abang Johari was born in Limbang on 6 August 1949, [10] to Abang Openg Abang Sapiee and Dayang Masniah Abdul Rahman. He is the youngest of ten siblings. [10] His father, Abang Openg, traced his ancestry back to Kuching, with Abang Sapiee Abang Omar as his father.
